Thailand Entry
from Chennai.
Indian passport holders can enter Thailand without a visa, but the Thailand Digital Arrival Card is required and Thai immigration enforces the onward-ticket and funds conditions more strictly than most travellers expect.
What Actually Needs Doing Before You Fly.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| Step 1 | We confirm the visa-exempt route applies to you. It covers tourism for Indian passport holders subject to conditions on stay length, onward travel and funds. Longer stays, work, study, retirement or a planned extension need an actual visa applied for in advance, and we tell you which. |
| Step 2 | We file your Thailand Digital Arrival Card. This is a mandatory online declaration submitted before arrival, replacing the old paper arrival card, and it is checked at departure and on landing. |
| Step 3 | We check passport validity — at least six months from your arrival date — and confirm your return or onward ticket is a confirmed booking rather than a provisional hold, because Thai immigration distinguishes between the two. |
| Step 4 | We prepare your funds evidence. Thailand publishes a minimum amount that visa-exempt travellers may be required to demonstrate, and unlike many countries it does conduct spot checks at the airport. Being able to show it, in cash or on a card, avoids a difficult conversation. |
| Step 5 | We brief you on arrival practicalities — what to have on your phone, which counter to use, and the common questions asked of Indian travellers arriving on the visa exemption. |
Thailand runs genuine spot checks on funds and onward tickets for visa-exempt arrivals. This is not a theoretical requirement, and travellers are turned back at Bangkok and Phuket for failing it.
What You Need to Give Us.
| Document | Notes |
|---|---|
| Passport | Valid at least 6 months from arrival |
| TDAC confirmation | Filed before arrival, carried on your phone |
| Return or onward ticket | Confirmed booking, within the permitted stay |
| Accommodation proof | Hotel booking covering your stay |
| Funds evidence | Cash or card meeting the published minimum |
| Onward visas | If continuing beyond Thailand |
| For longer stays | A visa applied for in advance, not on arrival |
Thailand is easy to enter and easy to get wrong. There is no consulate reviewing your file in advance, so every condition is checked at the border by an officer who has seen a thousand arrivals that day.
The funds requirement is real
Thailand publishes a minimum amount that a visa-exempt traveller may be asked to demonstrate, per person, and immigration does check it. Not every arrival is asked, but enough are that travelling without the means to show it is a genuine gamble. A card with a visible balance or the equivalent in Thai Baht both satisfy it.
Onward ticket within the permitted stay
It is not enough to hold a return ticket — the departure must fall within the period you are permitted to stay. A traveller entering on a 60-day exemption with a flight home 75 days later is refused, and this catches people planning to extend once they arrive.
If you intend to stay longer
Extensions from within Thailand are possible in some circumstances but should never be the plan. If you know you want a longer stay, apply for the appropriate visa from India before travelling. Arriving on the exemption and hoping to extend is how travellers end up overstaying, and Thailand fines overstays on departure and records them.
For a Country That Needs No Visa.
The honest answer
You can file your own TDAC in a few minutes and book your own flights. For a straightforward trip by an experienced traveller, you do not need us for entry clearance, and we would rather say that than invent a service.
Where we earn our fee
Thailand is very often part of a multi-country trip — Thailand with Singapore, or with Malaysia, or as a stopover en route to Australia — and the requirements interact in ways that are easy to get wrong. Also for family groups where ticketing, hotels, internal flights to Phuket or Krabi, transfers and TDAC filings for eight people is genuinely a job. For honeymoon and group packages where you want the itinerary built rather than assembled. And when something breaks — a passport short on validity, a connection cancelled, a booking that no longer evidences onward travel — and it needs fixing before your flight.
Thailand from Chennai, Practically.
Getting there
Chennai to Bangkok is about three and a half hours direct, with daily services on Thai Airways, IndiGo, Thai AirAsia and Air India Express. It is the shortest international leisure sector from Chennai and among the cheapest, which is why it remains the most-booked first overseas trip for Chennai families and young couples.
Bangkok plus what
Bangkok alone rarely satisfies a week. The common pairings are Bangkok with Pattaya for a short beach add-on, Bangkok with Phuket or Krabi for a proper island stay, or Bangkok with Chiang Mai for the north. Internal flights are cheap and frequent; overnight buses are not worth the saving. Two destinations in a week works comfortably, three is tight.
Food for Chennai travellers
Thai food is superb but chilli-forward in a different register from Tamil food, and pure vegetarian options in tourist areas are thinner than people assume. Where a family needs vegetarian, Jain or halal food reliably, we pick hotels and areas accordingly rather than leaving it to chance — this is a routine request on this route and it changes which hotel we book.
Money
Thai Baht is available at our Mannadi counter. Thailand is a cash-friendly destination outside malls and hotels, so carry more physical currency here than you would for Singapore or Dubai. Airport exchange rates in Bangkok are poor.
Season
November to February is the dry, comfortable window and the busiest. March to May is hot. June to October is the monsoon, cheaper and perfectly workable in Bangkok but less so on the Andaman islands, where sea conditions close some boat transfers. If your trip is islands-focused, the season genuinely matters.
