The 6N/7D Itinerary.
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Fly Chennai to Delhi, about 2 hours 45 minutes. Transfer to the Volvo coach terminal at Majnu ka Tila or ISBT Kashmere Gate for the overnight semi-sleeper to Manali. Dinner halt en route. Travellers who prefer to avoid the overnight coach can take a Delhi hotel night and a private car the next morning at a supplement. |
| Day 2 | Arrive Manali mid-morning. Check in and rest — the road journey is long and the altitude change is real. Afternoon walk to Hadimba Devi Temple in the deodar forest, the Manu Temple at Old Manali, and Mall Road for dinner. |
| Day 3 | Full day at Solang Valley, 13 km up the valley — snow activities in winter, paragliding, zorbing and the ropeway in summer. Return via Nehru Kund and the Vashisht hot springs, where the sulphur baths are free and open to all. |
| Day 4 | Rohtang Pass day if the pass is open and your permit comes through, with stops at Rahala Falls and Marhi. When Rohtang is closed, the alternative is the Atal Tunnel to Sissu in Lahaul — a 9.02 km tunnel that opens onto a completely different, drier landscape, snow-covered well into spring. |
| Day 5 | Kullu valley day — river rafting on the Beas at Babeli, the Kullu shawl and Himachali cap workshops, Naggar Castle with its 500-year-old cedar and stone construction, and the Nicholas Roerich art gallery. |
| Day 6 | Morning free for Manali market shopping — Himachali shawls, apple and plum preserves, Kullu caps. Afternoon transfer to the Volvo coach for the overnight return to Delhi. |
| Day 7 | Arrive Delhi in the morning, transfer to the airport and fly back to Chennai. We keep a 4 hour buffer between coach arrival and flight departure because the Delhi highway approach is unpredictable. |

Getting a Chennai Family to the Himalayas.
Choosing the route
Manali is 2,700 km from Chennai and there is no way to avoid a road leg. Chennai to Delhi and then the overnight Volvo is the standard and cheapest combination, and for most travellers under 55 it works well. Chennai to Chandigarh and then an eight hour drive cuts the road time by a third and is what we recommend for families with children or elderly parents. Bhuntar Airport at Kullu is only 50 km from Manali but the runway sits in a valley and flights cancel frequently in winter fog, so we book it only with a road fallback in place.
Altitude and acclimatisation
Manali town sits at about 2,050 m, which almost nobody from Chennai finds difficult. Solang Valley at 2,560 m is also comfortable. Rohtang Pass at 3,978 m is where breathlessness, headaches and nausea appear, particularly for travellers who go up on their first full day. We put the Rohtang day on day 4, not day 2, for exactly this reason.
What to pack from Chennai
Chennai shops do not sell what a Himachal winter requires. For December to February travel, you need a proper insulated jacket, thermals, woollen socks, gloves and a cap — layered cotton is not enough at −5°C. Snow boots and heavy gear can be hired at Solang Valley by the day, which is more sensible than buying. For March to June, a fleece and a light windproof jacket are sufficient, plus sunscreen — the high-altitude sun is much stronger than it feels.
Food
Pure vegetarian and South Indian food is available in Manali town, though the range is limited outside the Mall Road area. Groups travelling from Chennai often ask us to pre-arrange a South Indian breakfast at the hotel, which we do at no extra cost when the group is above 15. Jain meals need a week's notice.
Booking lead time
For May and June travel, book eight to ten weeks ahead — this is the peak North Indian holiday season and both flights and Manali hotels sell out. For the Christmas and New Year snow window, book by early November. September and October are the easiest months to book late, and also among the prettiest.
